Forteza has been amazing. It is incredibly inclusive and welcoming in a way I've never experienced in a gym, and it's now a place filled not with strangers working out, but good friends. I got hooked on the FightingFit classes, and now am going back for the Swordsmanship courses. I recommend anyone who is looking to be stronger, get fit, or just play with cool swords come check it out!

The owner and his staff were so accommodating and friendly and extremely knowledgeably in Renaissance history and its weapons. I felt instantly like swordplay was a history class we should all take. I stayed and watched the children's class and an adult in rapier and longsword and I am excited to train with them.

My first day was great! The instructor and the other athletes were incredibly nice. I can't wait to go back again and again! In addition to the great fitness package, they also offer nutritional advice, so I look forward to taking advantage of that as well.

About Forteza Fitness & Martial Arts

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?

We are the ONLY full-time school in the Midwest offering Historical European Martial Arts. Our Knightly Arts program emphasizes Armizare, the fighting tradition practiced by Italian knights in the 14th and 15th centuries, and includes everything from the two-handed sword to wrestling, dagger-fighting and fully-armoured combat. .The Renaissance Swordplay program begins with the elegant rapier, and expands to teach using the rapier with daggers and cloaks, the sword and buckler, even two swords use together. All of this and a good workout, too! You will get a chance to combine martial arts with a glimpse into another era, taught in a modern, professional and friendly environment in a school with nearly two-decades of experience and an international reputation.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business?

Forteza is an ancient Italian word meaning “fortress” or “stronghold”. Within our studio, that stronghold is you. At Forteza our goal is to help each person who comes through our door build their own personal stronghold; the stronghold of their bodies, minds and spirits.

What do you love most about your job?

The people! Over the years we have built an ecclectic and fun-loving student base who range in age from 16 - 64, include PhDs, professionals, tradesmen, theater-folk and students in a big, quirky family united by a love of martial arts, history and a sense of wonder.

What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?

"You've helped me become who I always felt I was on the inside." By the way - *they* did the work, we just provided the tools!
