Hotel at a Glance: Royal St. Charles

Situated just one block from the historic French Quarter, the Royal St. Charles offers easy access to many of New Orleans’s most famous attractions. Hop on the St. Charles streetcar line right outside of the hotel or hoof it to the oldest neighborhood in the city, which is itself a national landmark. Here, you’ll find a mixture of time-honored drinking holes such as Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, which was built in the early 1700s and is rumored to be the oldest structure continuously used as a bar in the U.S., as well as the more modern, boozy haunts of Bourbon Street. In the other direction are the business district and the nearby Convention Center, also within walking distance from the hotel.

  • Sweet stuff: The onsite PJ’s Coffee serves java, pastries, and other pick-me-ups throughout the day.
  • Hit the slots at Harrah’s Casino, located three blocks from the hotel.
  • Plan an adventure: Onsite concierge services help guests book everything from alligator swamp tours to steamboat cruises on the Mississippi.
  • Grand entrance: The dazzling lobby is lit by overhead chandeliers and light panels embedded in the walls, accented by bright, bold colors throughout.

New Orleans’s French Quarter: Let the Good Times Roll

“Stop thinking of New Orleans as the worst-organized city in the United States,” writes author Dan Baum in Nine Lives, his post-Katrina book. “Start thinking of it as the best-organized city in the Caribbean.” Some folks think there is something distinctly foreign about New Orleans, a place where people’s priorities seem inclined toward enjoying life and relishing the moment at hand. Nothing says it better than the town’s unofficial Cajun creed: “Laissez les bons temp rouler,” or “Let the good times roll.”

Historical buildings with intricate wrought-iron balconies line the narrow streets of New Orleans’s French Quarter. Here, street musicians often fill the air with jazz music, their trombones and tubas swinging back and forth. Just off the Jackson Square park and near the towering St. Louis Cathedral, the legendary Café Du Monde serves beignets under heaping piles of powdered sugar, as well as cups of iced or steaming café au lait.

And then there’s Bourbon Street, where neon lights advertise frozen cocktails and gaudy strip clubs and crowds gather along 13 city blocks. The nearby Frenchmen Street, just north of the Quarter, provides a slightly less touristy taste of New Orleans nightlife. Some of the city’s most popular live jazz and blues bars dominate this historic two-block district, with each venue hosting world-class musicians nearly every night of the week. Jazz fills the air at the Spotted Cat Music Club, where a sign warns that both drinks and drunks are barred from the piano—but like all rules in New Orleans, it’s one that’s bound to get bent from time to time.

We were upgraded to a king room. We loved this place. The room was small but cozy. It was clean and comfortable and we had a nice view from our window. Another review mentioned a hot tub and courtyard...this hotel has neither. There may be a suite with a hot tub but regular rooms do not. It is in a great location and safe neighborhood. They give a complimentary drink coupon to each person and have complimentary king cake after 4pm daily. The staff was very nice and a big shot out to Kadeem and Deshaun/a.

BED BUGS/SOILED MATTRESS BED BUGS/SOILED MATTRESS!!! I had woke up with itchy bite mark on my thighs and told the front desk. We went up to check the bed but I was asked to leave as the maintenance guy took off the bedsheets to investigate the issue. It was clear why I was asked to leave because underneath the multiple layers of bedsheet they used it to hide a soiled mattress. It was old, stained brown, bodily fluids. I was horrified and angry by this point and I ask for a different room. The front desk then gives me a room that hasn't been cleaned. This made me even more upset so I just wanted a full refund and no longer wanted to be at the hotel. They would not give me a refund and told me they would call the police on me if I didn't leave. On top of that the maintenance man argued with me for taking the sheets off. This was the worst experience at a hotel ever. I still have these rash on my thighs from sleeping on a soiled mattress. Who know what kind of diseases could have transmit to me so I am going to see my doctor today to get checked out. I urge customers to not stay at this filthy hotel and to always check your mattress before you sleep.

Stay was terrible There was no room service, no appliances in the room except for the coffee maker and it was dirty. Key cards kept freezing, telephone in the room was not working so we had to keep going downstairs when we needed something. We had to keep asking for towels and the receptionist was rude.

Not great but good location No one came to clean the room, change the towels, or take out the trash during our entire stay and we were there for four nights. Receptionist has to let you into the building and we were locked out in the rain for a while because no one was at the front desk. Hotel is in a really great location though and is walking distance from a lot of things including bourbon street.
