Dallas, Texas: Historical Parks and Rejuvenated Urban Districts in North Texas

Though some know Dallas only for the massive AT&T Stadium (which is actually in Arlington), the city is also an enclave of arts and nature, overflowing with botanical gardens, art galleries, and live theater. Historic Main Street connects many of the city’s recently rejuvenated urban districts, as well as the popular Main Street Garden, a block-long public park surrounded by architecturally significant buildings. Locals come here to picnic on the expansive lawn or watch a movie under the moonlight in the summer and fall.

A short walk from downtown Dallas, you’ll find horse-drawn carriages clopping along brick streets in the city’s historic West End district, which dates back to the 19th century. This part of the city also contains Dealey Plaza, where President Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963. At The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, housed in the former Texas School Book Depository, you can visit the spot where Lee Harvey Oswald is believed to have shot at Kennedy’s presidential motorcade.

Joggers and bikers can zip through the fashionable Turtle Creek neighborhood, located about 4 miles west of downtown, via the Katy Trail, which follows an old interstate railroad. Back near downtown Dallas, the 277-acre Fair Park is the location of North America’s largest Ferris wheel and seven museums and four performing-arts centers, many of which are inside art-deco buildings built for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition.

Took my daughter on a little trip to Texas for graduating kindergarten and stayed here. The hotel is beautiful and everyone is was very friendly. My daughter was given a little prize each day from a toy chest and one day they had a candy bar that she just loved. I can’t say enough about how great everyone was. We will definitely be returning!

Batter Than Our Last Stay A three-day stay over the Christmas/New Year 2024 holiday brought back memories of the Fairmont Dallas of years ago. While the decor of the lobby and rooms remains the same (some reviewers accuse it of being outdated but we like the soothing brown/grey/beige colors, the retro 1970s decor, and the expansive feel of the rooms and lobby), the small details - housekeeping, front desk registration, doorman greeting, maintenance, gift shop - have returned to their traditional high levels. The complimentary hotel limousine for short downtown trips is very welcomed, and Ron took good care of us. There are, however, still some shortcomings. The Pyramid hotel restaurant has the same menu as the lobby-bar snack menu - not exactly what you would call fine dining. Gone is the restaurant buffet breakfast which, I guess, has been replaced by their top-floor Gold Service lounge with the higher room tariffs. We'd rather spend our money on a two-room executive suite with panoramic windows overlooking Klyde Warren Park. The central location is still the hotel's best asset - close to Klyde Warren Park (nothing like a Mexican-food dinner at "Mi Cocina"), the excellent Dallas Museum of Art, the legendary downtown Neiman Marcus store (although, like every remaining US downtown department store, go on line for merchandise selection rather than for the excellent personalized service and ambiance of the brick-and-mortar store), The Eye sculpture, "The Woolworth" bar and restaurant (highly recommend), the Union Train Station for Amtrak (the only way to travel between Austin and Dallas to avoid airport hassles as well as Interstate 35 construction and trailer rigs from Mexico), and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) lines. Will we return? We have for the last more than twenty years and intend to return.

Christmas Concert Weekend I cannot say enough good about our stay at this hotel! My two teenage granddaughters and I were in Dallas to attend a concert and we stayed overnight at the Fairmont. Valet parking attendants greeted us upon arrival, check in was seamless, our accommodations were very nice and the staff went above and beyond to be sure that we had everything we needed. The "city view room" was very pretty and very comfortable. We ate dinner in restaurant and our service was excellent and the meal was delicious. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Amazing Staff! Hotel stay was wonderful. A special shoutout to the Head Chef. My husband and I were killing time in the back of the restaurant lounge and he saw us. He offered us some fresh made tea. It was the most delicious tea I have ever had. I asked for the recipe and he was so sweet and wrote out his own personal recipe for me. Very grateful and I can’t wait to get home to make it. Thank you chef! _
