French Culinary Vacation in Normandy
On this culinary vacation in Normandy, you’ll divide your time between sightseeing tours in the French countryside and hands-on cooking classes, where you’ll learn to prepare the dishes that have made France the world’s culinary capital. You’ll also have time on your own to explore the beautiful seaside city of Dieppe. The trip includes:
- 6 nights of deluxe room accommodations at Nest in Normandy
- Round-trip transfers from Dieppe train station
- Welcome dinner
- Continental breakfast every morning
- Lunches with wine
- Five dinners
- Three hands-on cooking classes
- Watercress production excursion
- Castle garden tour
- Farmers’ market tour with chef
- Calvados and cider tour and tasting
- Airfare is not included with this Groupon
Day 1: Arrival and Welcome Dinner
After your arrival in the seaside resort town of Dieppe, you’ll be met at the train station and taken to the Nest in Normandy inn for a welcome drink and an overview of your trip. That night, you’ll be treated to a welcome dinner made with seasonal ingredients—your first taste of French cuisine on the trip.
- French countryside: Dieppe is in the Normandy region, a diverse and fertile area known for its apple-based products, seafood, and other specialties—a perfect setting for a culinary adventure.
- Take a stroll by the sea: It’s only about 200 yards from the inn.
Days 2–3: Sightseeing and Cooking Classes
In the morning of day 2, you’ll be led on a guided tour through Dieppe, past churches, historical monuments, and the city’s four harbors. Sightseeing on day 3 includes a visit to the vegetable garden on the grounds of Miromesnil Castle, a chateau dating back to the 16th century. Both days end with hands-on cooking classes during which you’ll help the inn’s chef prepare dinner.
- Lunch: mussels and cider at a beachside restaurant on day 2, a picnic in a seaside cabin on day 3
- What you’ll learn to cook: mouth-watering local specialities, including suckling rack of veal, crab rillettes, and wafer-thin apple tarts
Days 4–5: Locally Made Products and Some Time Off
Next, you’ll learn all about Normandy’s best locally made products. That includes a tour and tasting at the famous Fécamp Abbey, where the herbal brandy-based Bénédictine liqueur is produced using no fewer than 27 different plants. You’ll also pay a visit to a farm where goat cheese is made, and enjoy a stop in Veules-les-Roses to see a watercress producer.
- Seafood dinner: Day 4 ends with a cornucopia of locally caught fruits de mer: oysters, crab, shrimp, and more
- Free day: Day 5 is set aside for taking it easy—take a swim in the pool, go shopping in town, or book a spa treatment. The only thing on the agenda is a midday tour of a peaceful garden by the ocean.
Days 6–7: Farmers’ Markets, Another Class, and Departure
In the morning, you’ll stop by a farmers’ market to peruse the fruit, vegetable, and cheese offerings before heading to a private lake for a barbecue. In the afternoon, you’ll get a tour of an orchard to learn how Normandy cider and Calvados brandy are made (yes, you’ll get to taste some). Then it’s back to the inn for one last cooking class.
- Fish class: In your final class, you’ll prepare a fish-themed menu of seared scallops and pan-fried turbot in Norman butter. Lavender crème brûlée is for dessert.
- Farmers’ market redux: You can stop by another farmers’ market on your last day if you have time and need one last taste of the region’s fresh fruit and vegetables.
