About Body Glove

The water-obsessed sporting company Body Glove began in 1953 in the most fitting of places: a modest surf shop so close to the ocean that the waves often broke the windows open. Owners and accomplished sportsmen Bill and Bob Meistrell didn’t mind—they were too busy inventing what would become the world’s first commercially viable wetsuit. As luck would have it, they invented the iconic sports apparel in what has become arguably the world’s first and oldest surf shop, the Dive N Surf.

Since then, the name Body Glove has become synonymous with innovation, as the brothers also created many of the wetsuit’s modifications throughout the decades. These include certain decorative detailings, no-zip designs, and the first water-repellent suit. They also furthered innovation in another way—they captured the attention of the fashion world. In the 1980s, Body Glove was the first surf brand to grace the covers of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and other high-fashion publications. Through it all, the company has dressed dozens of notable surfers, wakeboarders, and divers over their 60-plus years of business, including Rick “Rockin Fig’ Fignetti and Holly Beck.
