About Sperry

A lifelong sailor, Paul Sperry spent years searching for a way to gain sure footing on slippery, treacherous boat decks. In 1935, his land-faring dog inspired the perfect solution: wavy grooves carved into a rubber sole allowed Sperry to mimic the dog’s sure-footedness even in wet conditions. Soon members of the Cruising Club of America and even the US military came calling; the latter named Sperry Top-Siders as an official shoe of the Navy during World War II. But it wasn’t until the 1960s, when America was mesmerized by the Kennedy family’s preppy nautical lifestyle, that Sperry Top-Siders became an integral part of America’s pop culture and fashion scene.
