About Valentino

As a boy, Valentino Garavani chaperoned his sister during dates to the cinema. His eyes quickly wandered away from the task at hand to the sirens of the day and their awe-inspiring costumes. These evenings in the cinema ignited a curiosity and passion that led to Valentino’s decision to study fashion. He would go on to study in Paris during the height of 50’s haute couture. After a few apprenticeships, the young designer opened his own luxury shop and gained early fans in Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, and Audrey Hepburn.

Valentino was responsible for many firsts. He was the first to turn a brand’s monogram in to a coveted pattern. The brand’s trademark “V” still graces purses, scarves and only the most fashionable birthday cakes. Valentino was also developed his signature use of poppy red, a color that will forever bear his name in tribute. Though the designer retired in 2007, the design house remains committed to his luxurious and elegant aesthetic, while also imbuing it with a contemporary point of view. As for Valentino himself, he’s quoted as remarking, “I hope people will say, ‘Mr. Valentino, he did something for fashion, no?’”
