- The film: Directed by, Milos Forman, with a script by Peter Shaffer, Amadeus depicts the rivalry between established composer Antonio Salieri and rising genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The court of Austrian Emperor Josef II is the setting of the conflict between Salieri’s disgust with Mozart’s graceless, selfish manner and his jealousy over Mozart’s artistic talent.
- The awards: Adapted from Shaffer’s Tony Award–winning play, Amadeus won eight Academy Awards in 1984, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
