Celebrated conductor Antal Doráti first fashioned Graduation Ball in 1938 from several of Johann Strauss II’s lesser-known compositions, and today the ballet springs to new life through the choreography of Ballet and Friends’ artistic director Slawomir Wozniak. The charming piece is set at a girls’ finishing school in the 1840s, as the students are preparing for graduation and the titular ball. The girls prepare divertissements to entertain the cadets of the local military academy, who will be joining in the festivities as guests of the headmistress. Amidst the revelry, a mischievous young woman and a strapping lad begin a secret romance, avoiding the watchful eyes of the chaperones and the even-more watchful eyes of the audience as they try to steal a kiss. The lighthearted performance features international guest performers alongside student dancers.
For the program’s second half, the company showcases the award-winning performers of Ballet and Friends in classical and contemporary variations, ensemble numbers, and partnered flamenco and ballroom dances. Each piece allows the artists to demonstrate the skills—and passion—that have earned them local, national, and international honors.
