Riders in the Sky
As the premier proprietors of C&W—Comedy and Western—the Grammy-winning Riders in the Sky simultaneously spoof and epitomize classic cowboy tunes. Comprised of Ranger Doug on the guitar, Too Slim playing the upright bass, Woody Paul with his fiddle, and Joey “the CowPolka King” holding the accordion, the quartet strides onstage wearing embroidered shirts, multi-gallon hats, and shoes shiny enough to blind any sing-off contenders. During their live performances, western melodies alternate with chuckle-filled sketches, recalling the group’s 30 albums and 6,100 concert appearances. Their mastery of a semi-mythical aesthetic, in which every cowpoke knew how to carry a four-part harmony, has endeared them to generations of listeners, leading to gigs writing Woody the Cowboy’s theme music for Toy Story 2 and a regular berth performing at the Grand Ole Opry.
