El Gran Combo

• El Sondido: An orchestra packed with percussion (congas, shakers, bongos, maracas), horns, group vocals, and excitement-building tempos to deliver a textbook salsa sound. No matter what language you speak, this is pure, joyous dance music.
• El Incinio: when Rafael Ithier persuaded a group of musicians to leave their steady gig with Rafael Cortijo’s orchestra, “Cortijo y su Combo,” to form El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico
• El Resulto: Over half a century later, El Gran Combo has endured as the most successful group to ever come out of Puerto Rico, and is widely considered to be the most successful salsa group of all time.
• La Universidad de la Salsa: the honorary title the group received due to the sheer numbers of salsa acts who got their start in the Combo (including “Godfather of Salsa” Andy Montañez) or have been backed by the troupe (including “Queen of Salsa” Celia Cruz)
• El Aniversario: In 2012, the group celebrated its 50th anniversary with a world tour that spanned five continents, and they still play like they have 100 years left to go.
• El Desempeño: Three singers bellow upbeat songs of romance while strutting the stage in syncopation, an orchestra spanning up to 14 members fills the room with rhythmic swells, and spry bandleader Rafael Ithier refuses to act his age (he’s 89).
