What You’ll Do
Most flowers need sunlight and water to bloom, but at UrbanGlass Studio they only need fire. In a one-hour session, students work with instructors to create their own delicate blossom while learning the ins and outs of glass fusing.
-
Build Petal by Petal
Carefully assemble a colorful flower—suitable for use as a pin or suncatcher—one clear or opaque glass petal at a time. -
High-Temperature Fusion
Instructors place your flower in a kiln to fuse at temperatures that an ordinary plant could never survive. -
See How Things Turn Out
Glasswork can be tricky, and pieces run the risk or cracking or breaking in the process. However, if the flowers make it through the process unscathed, they can be picked up and brought home after they cool—roughly a week later.
Where You’ll Meet
UrbanGlass Studio
Before UrbanGlass, there weren’t many places for glass artists to practice their craft. Opened in 1977 (when it was called the New York Experimental Glass Workshop), the artist-access studio was the first of its kind in the US, making it possible for artists to create outside of a school, factory, or home studio. Today, the center is the largest of its kind in the country, welcoming more than 500 students a year, serving as the primary studio for more than 200 artists, and inspiring young artists to keep creating.
