V101’s Throwback Holiday Jam
- Bone Thugs-N-Harmony: The quintet introduced many listeners to their self-described “flip flop flow” with ’90s hits including “East 1999” and “Tha Crossroads”—their Grammy-winning single about death that salutes hip-hop icon Eazy-E. The song is especially poignant since he’s the one who signed them to Ruthless Records.
- Ja Rule: With brass-knuckle rhymes delivered in a voice that smolders like a hot cigar, Ja Rule first came to prominence thanks to a tour with Jay-Z and DMX. He cemented that prominence with the hit “Holla Holla” and high-profile collaborations with Jennifer Lopez (“Ain’t It Funny”), Christina Milian (“Between You and Me”), and Ashanti (“Always on Time”).
- DJ Quik: One of the luminaries of the West Coast rap scene in the early ’90s, this producer, rapper, and beat-maker debuted to critical acclaim with Quik Is the Name. His 2011 album, The Book of David, entered the Top 5 on Billboard’s rap chart, and his latest, 2014’s The Midnight Life, was described by AllMusic.com as “a fun-loving affair.”
- Ying Yang Twins: The platinum-selling Atlanta crunk outfit behind “Badd” and the New Orleans Saints’ touchdown theme, “Halftime (ft. Homebwoi),” is also famous for its collaborations with King of Crunk himself, Lil Jon—namely on raging party anthems “Salt Shaker” and “Get Low.”
- Chingy: This rapper started out by touring with Nelly and then becoming the Ludacris’ protégé on his Disturbing The Peace label. Chingy’s debut single “Right Thurr” top the charts as a good-time rap song with catchy and club-friendly beats. He is also well known for his hits “Pullin Me Back” and “Dem Jeans”.
- Adina Howard: Singer and songwritter that rose to fame with big hits in the 90’s from her album Do You Wanna Ride with songs like “Freak Like Me”, “Whats Love Got to Do With it?” featuring Warren G., and “T-Shirt and Panties” featuring Jamie Foxx.
- Lighter Shade of Brown: Composed of two Mexican Americans, One Dope Mexican and Don’t try To Xerox, this hip hop duo is from California and are best known for their 90’s hit “On a Sunday Afternoon”.
- Sugar Hill Gang: Acclaimed for being the first rap single to ever top Billboard’s Top 40 came from this duo’s “Rapper’s Delight”. Performed for Soul Train in 1981 with their hit, “8th Wonder”.
