The Issue: Rugby for Positive Youth Development
The game of rugby allows children to experience the benefits of a team environment while learning an internationally loved sport. Skills learned by playing rugby—such as teamwork, time management, endurance under pressure, and trust—benefit kids and young adults both on and off the rugby pitch.
The Campaign: Sponsor At-Risk Youth to Play Rugby
If this Grassroots campaign raises $150, then the Chicago Dragons Rugby Football Club, in partnership with the Illinois Youth Rugby Association (IYRA), can sponsor one at-risk youth to play rugby for a season. Each additional $150 raised will be used to sponsor another child for a season.
The IYRA encourages both boys and girls of all ages (up to their late teens) to play rugby, and organizes rugby competitions between high-school and youth rugby clubs across the state.
You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.
Chicago Dragons Rugby Football Club
A Division III member of the Midwest and Chicago Area Rugby Football Unions, the Chicago Dragons Rugby Football Club plays competitively within its division. As the first team in the Midwest to formally join the International Gay Rugby Association and Board (IGRAB), the Dragons strive to increase awareness and diversity in the sport, and create a welcoming environment for players of all races, ages, and sexual orientations.
Through its partnership with the Illinois Youth Rugby Association (IYRA), the Dragons aim to increase participation and interest in the sport of rugby in Chicago, as well as provide opportunities for youth to stay active and learn essential life skills such as teamwork and good sportsmanship.
