The Issue: Limited Opportunities to Explore Nature
Young men and women from low-income families often have fewer opportunities to experience the outdoors and travel away from urban neighborhoods than their peers. Exploring the outdoors can improve health and invite people to engage in a social network that extends beyond their neighborhood. Camping, canoeing, and rock climbing can also teach youths new behaviors and a sense of empowerment that encourages growth into healthy, responsible adults.
The Campaign: Sponsoring a Two-Day Youth Camping Trip
If this Grassroots campaign raises $420, then Chicago Voyagers can sponsor a two-day outdoor program for 10 young people. Each additional $420 will sponsor a two-day outdoor program for another group of 10 youths. Overnight trips engage Chicago youth aged 12–18 in adventures such as camping, biking, caving, canoeing, and rock climbing. With a two-to-one ratio of adults to participants, young people learn adventure techniques from program leaders and build interpersonal relationships with their peers in a safe outdoor setting.
