Donations fund processing of cheek-swab kits to identify potential bone-marrow donors for the international registry
The Issue: Registries for Blood and Tissue Donation
People with leukemia, lymphoma, and other cancers or genetic disorders often require transplants of blood stem cells, bone marrow, and umbilical-cord blood to survive. Many do not have matching donors in their families and must rely on donations from people they do not know. Donor registries help match recipients with donors from around the world.
The Campaign: Processing Swab Kits for Potential Donors
If this Grassroots campaign raises $490, then Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation can fund the processing of nine swab kits to test potential bone-marrow donors for the registry. Each additional $54 raised will fund the testing of another swab-test kit.
People between the ages of 18 and 60 can get their cheeks swabbed at Gift of Life donor drives across the county, or they can register online to have a kit mailed to their home. Once the lab processes the kits, potential donors are added to the international registry. Selected donors complete a physical exam and bloodwork before undergoing the transplant.
