The Issue: Animal-Cruelty and Overpopulation Education
Teaching children about the importance of being kind to animals and properly caring for pets can help reduce instances of animal cruelty and pet overpopulation. By engaging children in fun in-classroom activities, they learn compassion and empathy toward animals, and they also may share their knowledge with their families and peers.
The Campaign: Educating Kids About Respect for Animals
If this Grassroots campaign raises $600, then Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana can sponsor the participation of 24 classrooms—each with 28 students—in its Adopt-a-Classroom program, which teaches children to be kind and respectful to animals and the environment. The Humane Society of the United States – Indiana will match donations up to $2,000.
Participating classrooms receive school-year subscriptions to Kind News, an eight-page magazine filled with articles about pet care and wildlife, as well as fun activities that teachers can incorporate into their curriculum. The magazine is available in three reading levels from kindergarten to sixth grade, so teachers can select the age-appropriate version. Each additional $25 raised will fund a subscription for another class of 28 elementary-school students.
All donations will be matched up to a $2,000 total by The Humane Society of the United States – Indiana.
Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana
Created to help provide solutions to pet overpopulation in Indiana, Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana (SNSI) sponsors low-cost spay or neuter programs throughout the year at participating clinics. As part of its efforts to make these surgeries available for pet owners regardless of their income, SNSI conducts two reduced-fee spay or neuter campaigns each year in addition to its financial-assistance program, which provides qualifying pet owners with financial help for the procedures.
SNSI believes that educating children is crucial to bringing about long-term positive changes for Indianapolis-area cats and dogs. Since 1997, it has sponsored the participation of teachers and students in its Adopt-a-Classroom program, which incorporates pet-care and animal education into elementary curriculums to encourage respect and kindness toward animals.
