The Issue: Single Parents Living Below Poverty Line
According to data from the 2009 American Communities Survey, 39% of single female parents with children under 5 in Sacramento live below the poverty line.
The Campaign: Diapers for Children of Single Young Mothers
If this Grassroots campaign raises $380, then Tubman House can fund a month of diapers for 8 single young parents in the child-development program. Each additional $380 raised will fund another month's worth of diapers for 15 children. The organization has set a goal to raise $1,125 with today's campaign, which would fund three months' worth of diapers for 15 children.
You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.
Tubman House provides 18-month holistic housing, with support services that promote youth development, education, and career attainment, for pregnant women and mothers experiencing homelessness. Tubman residents gather in the mornings for discussions on raising children and pursuing careers, while the onsite child-development program engages children in play and educational activities. Women living in Tubman House also receive support from Tubman staff to attend college classes, jobs, and doctors' appointments, knowing that their children are in a safe and loving home. In addition to support services and childcare, Tubman House provides basic necessities such as diapers for its residents.
