Fewer than 7 out of 10 students graduated from Milwaukee public high schools in 2009, and an even smaller number went on to college. The YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee's Sponsor-A-Scholar pre-college mentoring program pairs academically promising and self-motivated students from low-income families with adult mentors who provide personal and academic guidance and support.
Starting as freshmen, Sponsor-A-Scholar students get connected with personal mentors, financial sponsors, and a supportive peer group to provide encouragement and guidance to help them finish high school and attend college. More than 98% of students in the Sponsor-A-Scholar program graduate from high school, with 95% of graduates going on to enroll in postsecondary education. Students who complete the program and enroll in college receive $5,000 of additional financial support, distributed throughout the course of their college careers. The Sponsor-A-Scholar program launches with a foundational three-week summer-enrichment experience, when students begin bonding with their peers and the staff who will be a part of their support network throughout high school.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help an incoming freshman in the Sponsor-A-Scholar program participate in the summer academic-enrichment program. If G-Team members raise $250, then the YMCA can cover the costs of one student's participation in the program. Each additional $250 raised will allow one more student to attend the program.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
