Cake-decorating classes make something edible more beautiful, unlike smooshing a pie in a swimsuit model’s face, which makes something beautiful more edible. Give cakes a face-lift like a pro with today’s Groupon: for $49, you get a three- to four-hour sweets-making or sweets-decorating class with Jennifer at Make It Sweet (up to a $100 value), formerly named All in One Bakeshop. Each class includes:
- Instruction from owner Jennifer
- All needed materials
- Take-home treats
- 10% off store items bought on day of class
Make It Sweet’s owner Jennifer guides students through the art of crafting or decorating seasonal cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and confections in three- to four-hour workshops. A graduate of the Culinary Academy of Austin and maker of a recent Food Network appearance, Jennifer applies her teaching passion to students at all experience levels. In Truffles class, culinary protégés craft toothsome ganache fillings before learning to temper and hand-mold chocolate to keep the sweet syrup from flooding nearby gingerbread villages. Students flex starchier skills in Cookie Decorating or Cupcake classes, in which Jennifer demonstrates how to bake confections and apply royal icing, flooding, fondant, and piping. Each class celebrates a seasonal theme, such as Valentines’ Day in February or Willie Nelson tours in summer. Jennifer teaches proper techniques for cake ball forming and dipping in Cake Ball courses, and supervises pupils as they test compressors and airbrushing cursive in Airbrush Basics.
Classes provide all necessary ingredients, icing nozzles, baking tools, and decorating supplies. Students are encouraged to take home what they make for later eating or use to persuade neighborhood children to reshingle their roof. If purchased on the same day, students get 10% off the store’s cadre of confection tools and ingredients.
