Although millions of Americans enjoy sushi every day, very few realize that it is fish and not the edible half of rock ‘n’ roll. Headbang your way to culinary enlightenment with today's deal: for $25, you get one seat in the “Just Roll It” sushi-making class from I WISH (a $50 value). Most classes are held at The Joynt in River North. A bevy of dates and times are available; see the sidebar for current scheduling. More classes will be added to meet demand, and the location may vary.
I WISH's sushi-making class gives students the culinary ammo they need to sharpshoot their way into the hearts and minds of sushi-loving friends, relatives, love interests, and enemies (use the fugu fish). Beginning with an explanation of sushi and its applications in conjunction with the human diet, a professional instructor will roll out all of the material, equipment, and food items needed to get hands-on experience in the field. Students will learn how to make three basic sushi rolls—the California roll, vegetable roll, and spicy tuna—along with the techniques that apply to each and every tube of rice-and-fish deliciousness. Chow down on the fruits of your labor as you learn more about fish, selecting sushi-grade ingredients, rice making, tools, techniques, and the childhood aspirations of each ingredient.
I WISH helps Chicagoans fill holes in their brain that they’ve always dreamed of plugging, offering friendly expertise and flexible scheduling. Organizers design the hands-on workshops to be equal parts cerebrum-satisfying information and laugh-inducing fun. They offer a chance to learn more about your neighborhood and meet other curious souls sharing the same sidewalks, elevators, and dentist chairs. Be sure to email I WISH to RSVP, and BYOB where applicable, but leave the deadly poisonous puffer fish at home.
