What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Started in 1974 by world renowned and ninth-degree International Grand Master Kaicho Shunji Watanabe. The center has six senior instructors with 100-plus years of combined teaching experience.
Is your location strictly for adults, or can kids participate as well?
The Japan Karate Center offers traditional karate, self-defense, judo, and fitness training to men and women of all ages and children as young as 5 years old in a family-oriented environment.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
Kaicho Shunji Watanabe came to North America in 1967 to demonstrate Shorinjiryu karate at the Montreal Expo. He was requested to help develop Shorinjiryu Karate-do in the USA and Canada. He made his home in Owings Mills, Maryland, and started Japan Karate Center, which he maintains to this day.
What do you love most about your job?
At our dojo in Owings Mills, Maryland, Kaicho Shunji Watanabe seeks to fulfill his mission of spreading the word of the spiritual Development of Individuality in Mind and Body” through the study of traditional karate-do techniques and the spirit of competition as the way to self-improvement.
