About Kennebec River Pub and Brewery
Kennebec River Pub and Brewery isn't your typical neighborhood spot. It's located deep in the Maine wilderness at the Northern Outdoors resort, which adventurers visit for whitewater rafting, ATV driving, snowmobiling, leaf peeping, and more. Don't let its rather remote location stop you from going, though. Kennebec has been named a must-try beer destination by Thrillist and one of America's Coolest Breweries by Travel + Leisure. Read on to find out why:
The Brews
A resort staff infected with enthusiasm for craft beers started the microbrewery in 1997. The small batches of beer, made with pure Kennebec Valley water, are sustainably brewed and naturally keg conditioned, meaning they never lose any flavor to filtration or pasteurization.
Sample the creamy and chocolatey Bear Naked Black Lager, a smooth roasted schwarzbier, or the Big Mama Blueberry Ale, which is crisply fruity and well-carbonated.
The Pub
It's the quintessential lodge, complete with knotted wood paneling, log ceiling beams, and a river-rock fireplace. After a thrilling trip down the Kennebec River's Class IV rapids, settle in for a draft—poured from taps carved into paddles—and gastropub eats—think Drunken Mac 'n' Cheese infused with the brewery's own beer and cornmeal-encrusted halibut with brussels sprouts. There's even an outdoor patio with a giant hot tub.
Pro tip: Check whether the brewery is open before you head out. It closes for brief periods around the rafting and snowmobiling seasons. The resort itself is open to visitors year-round.
