The Issue: Malnutrition and Food Insecurity Around the World
Hunger is the world's top health risk, according to data from the World Food Programme—it kills more people every year than malaria, AIDS, and tuberculosis combined. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization reports that nearly 870 million people worldwide were chronically undernourished in 2010–2012. Yet according that same UN report, that number represents a 13% decline from the number of undernourished people in 1990–1992, demonstrating that continued effort toward food distribution can have a visible impact.
The Campaign: Distributing Meals to DC Area Food Banks During the Holiday Season
If 25 people donate $6 to this Grassroots campaign, then Kids Against Hunger DC Metro can distribute 650 meals to underserved people locally. All of the meals will be distributed to homeless shelters in the DC area. Rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and 21 vitamins and minerals make up each specially formulated meal to meet daily nutritional requirements. Each additional $6 will fund 26 more meals for people in need. In addition to donating, KAHDC Metro encourages Grouponers to volunteer at its next packaging event on Saturday, November, 10th. Kids Against Hunger DC Metro, a humanitarian-aid organization established in 2009, combats hunger by providing nutritious meals to those in need, particularly children, in both the United States and around the world.
