In 1891, James Naismith mounted two peach baskets on opposite walls of a gym, inventing the rudimentary version of what we know today as “shelving.” Take your basketball off this grand innovation with today’s Groupon: for $39, you get enrollment for one child at the annual Travis Hansen Charity Basketball Camp organized by the Little Heroes Foundation (a $79 value). The camp takes place July 6 to July 8 at the XSI Factory in Lehi.
At the Travis Hansen Charity Basketball Camp, children aged 6 to 18 learn basketball fundamentals, listen to prominent speakers, and participate in a service project to aid hospitalized children. During three two-hour lessons, former Atlanta Hawk Travis Hansen leads a cadre of volunteer players and coaches in instructing children on basketball fundamentals, from shooting and dribbling to tomahawk dunking over snake pits. Speakers at the camp this year include Brigham Young University basketball head coach Dave Rose and former BYU player Marty Haws. On the second day of instruction, camp participants assemble welcome kits designed to comfort long-term hospitalized children during their medical stays.
Each camper receives a gift bag containing a t-shirt, a water bottle, and a wristband, in addition to the opportunity to win awards and prizes for giving the best press conference. Parents can observe the action from bleachers above the courts. All proceeds from the summer camp benefit The Little Heroes Foundation.
