Forget sporting a handlebar moustache or training a hawk to detail your car—eating a cupcake is the epitome of manliness. For proof, look no further than the creations at Mancakes Bakery, each iced with a signature "M" atop its perfectly baked base. Started by three self-described "Vancouver guys," the bakery eschews unnecessary icing or superfluous decorations. Instead, they focus on flavour. The bakers brainstorm endlessly, then test different cupcake combinations until the best make it into a daily rotation of at least 11 varieties. These treats aren't exclusive to a specific gender, of course, but the crafters expect all customers to have the same response to his or her first bite: "man."
Baked fresh each day, the selection of cupcakes includes the chocolate and banana King Kong and the Rum and Coke, a vanilla cake filled with cola cream and topped in rum buttercream. Others desserts delve into previously uncharted taste territory. Take the Buffalo Wing, for example: a spiced cupcake loaded with tangy blue cheese mousse and crowned with hot sauce buttercream and crispy chicken crumble. These unconventional combinations—not to mention tongue-in-cheek branding—has garnered Mancakes Bakery ample press attention, including a feature on CNN's iReport. And as befits any bakery worth its chest hair, Mancakes is the only shop in Vancouver to serve Deathwish Coffee, a roast that's purportedly twice as strong as any other on the market.
