Love the bakery and the way they decorate cakes. Will be going tomorrow to pick up a few small cakes to take to friends for a birthday celebration.

I went there to buy my daughters sweet 16 cake and left with 3 boxes of sweets and her cake. It was amazing.

What You'll Get

A finely prepared cake is like a fine wine—full-flavored, delicately structured, and inadvisable to consume while operating a segway. Safely savor tasty treats with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of cakes, baked goods, or classes at Mary Denning's Cake Shoppe in Westland.

Mary Denning's has been filling local bellies with made-from-scratch cakes, pastries, and pie for more than 20 years. The bakery boasts more than a dozen cake flavors, including michigan cherry, delectable dark chocolate, and traditional Billy Idol white wedding. Cakes range from 8-inch single-layer creations ($19.97) to sheet cakes that can feed up to 96 overwhelmed guests ($90). For those suffering from frostingphobia, Mary Denning's also outputs gourmet pies ($8.98–$10.98) and special-order cookie cakes (starting at $9.98), as well as handheld hunger-combatants, including gourmet brownies ($2.25 each), cupcakes ($7 for a half dozen), and buttery cut-out cookies (starting at two for $1).

Beyond baking a tempting selection of treats, the shop hosts cake classes ($40) designed to guide aspiring batter-beaters through the baking process. Past meetings have produced confectionary wonders in the form of imaginative flowers and dragons. Classes run three hours in length, and all materials are provided. Post-class, students depart with completed handcrafted edibles and an inkling for expedited consumption.

Mary Denning's Cake Shoppe has been featured on Fox 2, and it earned a top five spot in the race for Detroit's Best Bakery in 2008 thanks to a five-star average rating from CityVoters. Three Insider Pagers give it an average of four stars, and four Yelpers give it three stars.

About Mary Denning's Cake Shoppe

Each week, pre-booked tours take kids into Mary Denning's kitchen, where they learn about the creation of various cakes, pies, cookies, and baked goods. In one corner of the bakery, they might see the baker using Mary's mother's recipe to stuff pasties with ground sirloin and veggies. In another, owner Mary Denning creates custom cakes for weddings and special occasions, using icing to sculpt intricate floral designs or replicas of the edible baseball caps worn by famous gingerbread athletes.

But the cake shop doesn’t just accommodate kids. Mary and her team want to share their sweet creations with as many people as possible, so they make sugar and gluten free desserts and—on select days—host baking classes.
