One of life’s most fundamental necessities, healthy food, is essential not just to survival, but to basic human dignity as well. For thousands of homeless men and women in Washington, finding sustenance is a daily struggle, and the food that is available is often less than nutritious. Miriam's Kitchen addresses both the roots and effects of homelessness by serving healthy meals in a dignified environment and, in the process, drawing homeless men and women to the organization's supportive community and array of social services. In addition to providing nutrition, Miriam's Kitchen staffs caseworkers who help guests find shelter, employment, and permanent housing and also provides access to mental health, medical, and legal experts.
Miriam's Kitchen’s nourishing meals are the organization’s cornerstone service, welcoming 250–350 men and women each weekday with nutritious breakfasts and dinners. Menus feature whole grains, fresh meats, and local and organic fruits and vegetables. An average morning may open with scrambled eggs with salmon, roasted home fries, warm biscuits, and fresh-fruit salad. Evening guests dine on well-balanced fare such as pasta in marinara sauce, sautéed broccoli, garden salad, and whole-wheat rolls. Local farmers' markets and grocery stores donate much of the food, helping to keep costs to an average of $1 or less per meal. In 2010, the kitchen provided more than 75,000 meals.
Join G-Team to help Miriam's Kitchen serve up fresh, healthy meals to the District's homeless men and women. Giving levels of $1 and $10 are available. If G-Team members raise $100, Miriam's Kitchen can serve 100 nutritious meals. Each additional $10 raised will purchase an additional week of meals.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
