What You'll Get
Gawk at emergency vehicles (police car, fire truck, emergency bicycle, etc.) in action without any actual emergencies with today’s Groupon: $8 gets you pit admission to the annual Beat the Heat race taking place this year at North Star Dragway on Saturday, October 17.
Beat the Heat is a national program designed to educate kids about problems relating to illegal drug and alcohol use in a fun, interactive, racecar-related way. The October 17 race is the World Final event where more than 70 officers in amped-up police automobiles compete for SuperFame.
You and your tots (there’s no charge for kids under 12) will take in the action at the famed North Star Dragway, a 1/8-mile-long, pure concrete strip in Denton, Texas, right past the Love’s Truck Stop off I-35. Load up a cooler, strap a grill to the hood of your car (parking is free), or hit up the full-stocked concession stand for a full day of engine watching, engine listening, or engine licking. Take your younger siblings and get them on the right track, or bring your friends and plan out that money-laundering scheme because a racetrack filled with police officers is the last place they'd think to look.
Anti-Drug Programs That Missed the Mark
Beat the Heat is a fun program that teaches children to “Just Say No,” in a fun way. The reason that “Just Say No” is so successful and fun is because its message is direct, uncompromising, and exactly three words. Here are some anti-drug programs that never made it past the testing stage:
- Just Say Hmm…
- DARE to Keep Most Kids Off Drugs
- Placebo J. Frog’s Medicinal Misadventures
- The Foundation To Make Drugs Too Expensive
- Officer Friendly’s “You Wanna End Up Like My Sister, Margaret? Oh, You Do? Well Then Go Ahead and Use Drugs. See If I Care” video-cassette series.
