Outlaws Boxing has an illicit-sounding name, but it's also got "Positive Mental Attitude" spray-painted on its cinderblock walls. Instead of criminal behavior, Outlaws refers to the gym's no-frills philosophy and tough martial workouts. The owners cultivate this practical atmosphere as a conscious response to what they see as "the vanity and monotony" of other fitness centers.

They seem to have succeeded, as Outlaws Boxing is anything but monotonous. All around round the perimeter of the ring, where jabs and hooks land with satisfying whaps and grunts, both professional boxers and less experienced trainees are working hard to improve their skills. Under the guidance of coaches, they swing at punching bags; haul medicine balls, kettlebells, and weights; and struggle against functional-fitness-style exercises.
