Polo has been played on horseback since the fifth century BCE, whereas baseball is still regulated to humans due to a horse's incurable tendency to play too shallow in center field. Get a crash course in equine athletics with today's Groupon: for $30, you get a one-hour introductory polo lesson (a $60 value) at Polobear Polo Club in Tyrone. Arrive ready to ride in a pair of jeans or riding pants, as well as boots or other solid shoes with a low heel. All other equipment, including riding helmets and pony radar units, will be provided.
An official training center for the United States Polo Association, the Polobear Polo Club will teach the basics of the game to interested riders of any skill level. Each experienced instructor will demonstrate how to safely hold and swing the mallet, basic riding techniques, and rudimentary rules and strategy (rule one: no centaurs). Next, each student will be introduced to one of Polobear's training horses. After bonding with the animal (ideally while building a deck together), you'll take to the facility's large, grassy polo field and test out your polo-tential. Classes take place in groups of six or fewer so that all students receive detailed one-on-one guidance. Call to schedule your lesson.
