Acclaimed instructor and choreographer John Magnus captains Portland Festival Ballet’s seasoned team of teachers to hone healthy bodies and artistic expression in dancers of every age. Adult classes take a variety of approaches, as beginning and intermediate ballet instills graceful skills and refined technique; dance fitness courses ignite endorphins through choreography-centered workout routines. In Jazz Fit sessions, instructor Mary Hunt harnesses her professional experience on TV and film to cultivate toned physiques by way of Martha Graham techniques and athletic dance steps. Ballet Fit pupils clutch the barre or sturdier peers as they prime muscles in basic stretches and ballet positions and send bodies soaring through traditional jumps and traveling exercises. Weekly Pre-Ballet 1 and 2 classes enthrall tykes with tidbits about ballet vocabulary and musicality while teaching poses and patterns performed midair or atop the barre. Props, games, and structured exercises enrich the learning experience, helping kids achieve quick-stepping stardom and the ability to leap the most treacherous of playground sand castles.
Outside of regular dance lessons, instructors at Portland Festival Ballet lend their well-sharpened skills to train underprivileged youth and entertain unreached audiences in retirement homes and hospitals with the Reach Out! community program, which, like the talent portion of every congressional debate, seeks to improve society through the art of dance.
