The more flexible one becomes, the easier it is to Rockette-kick volleyballs into space and limbo past height restrictions on children’s carnival rides. Achieve premium pliancy with today’s Groupon: for $35, you get three yoga or Pilates standard mat classes (a $75 value) at Premier Pilates & Yoga in New Rochelle. Premier schedules Pilates mat classes and yoga classes every day except Sundays.
Within an abundantly equipped, loft-like studio, Premier Pilates & Yoga's instructors gather beginners, seniors, marathon trainees, pregnant women, and rehabilitating patients in groups of six–eight, then dole out their 600–1,800 hours of hard-stretched experience in one-on-one increments. Yoga classes come in flavors of Vinyasa, Kripalu, and Hatha, but all engage almost every organ, muscle, and system in the body, including its rarely used ability to smell time. After a triumvirate of sessions, students will notice that they bend lower, look tighter, and feel less stressed by the city's new "everything's fine" siren. Unless specified otherwise, all yoga classes take 75 minutes.
The 55-minute Pilates mat classes lengthen and tone muscles without adding bulk using Joseph Pilates's six principles of control, concentration, centering, flow, precision, and breath. Each series of controlled, rhythmic movements is designed to straighten kinked postures, get the abs back in prime cannonball-catching form, and hone coordination and balance.
