The best way to gird yourself for the icy flagellation of winter is to make your body a fitness temple, and your mind a fitness fireplace. Do both with today's Groupon to Real Pilates.

For nearly 15 years, this Tribeca studio has been gently building the strength of its staff, offerings, and clients. With today's deal, $50 gets you $100 toward a private Pilates training class, Pilates group classes, a massage, pre-natal workshops, or nutritional counseling at Real Pilates, a critic's pick in New York Magazine. If the cost of your chosen service exceeds $100, you just pay the difference.

The spacious two-level studio gives you lots of ways to use your Groupon. Reserve some mat space in four group Pilates classes ($27 each). More than just mat exercises, the classes give participants access to Pilates Wall Units that provide spring resistance training—the mathematical equivalent of wrestling Tigger with your bare hands and a telephone cord. Private lessons are also available. Real Pilates is also well-equipped to nurse new mothers to health in either pre- or post-natal training ($35/session).

You'll be working out on a comprehensive lineup of top-notch equipment and traditional mats in the company of fellow Pilates performers and trusted leaders. Instructors are hand-picked by seasoned instructor, author, and studio owner, Alycea Ungaro, to provide the best of the best of the best. Using a typewriter that's missing the s key, she's written five books about getting the most out of Pilates. Other Real Pilates instructors include Daniel Lyon, author of Pilates for Men and Karrie Adamany, author of Post-Pregnancy Pilates. A licensed physical therapist is also on the premises.

Your Groupon is also good for massage therapy to limber up your body and mind. Your massage can enhance future Pilates experiences or just give you some time to think about what you've done to that defenseless helicopter. A 50-minute massage is $100; 80 minutes is $125.

Prices above reflect offerings as of January 1, 2010. Currently, group mat classes are $25.

Reviews

New York Magazine selected Real Pilates as a Critics' Pic, adding:

  • Best-selling author of Pilates: Body in Motion, The Portable Pilates and The Pilates Promise, Alycea Ungaro is a bit of a guru. (She counts Madonna, Uma Thurman, and Christy Turlington among her clientele.) Her Tribeca studio, open since 1996, predates the Pilates craze and since she’s also a licensed physical therapist, Ungaro puts a strong emphasis on alignment and brings a real awareness of physical idiosyncrasies to her interpretations of Pilates methods. – New York Magazine
