Sugar Philly is great. There is no better place to pick up a macaroon when you get that craving.
  • Mobile gourmet treats
  • Fresh ingredients
  • Avoid high-end restaurants
  • Eco-friendly truck

Before dessert trucks, the mobile dessert industry experimented with the fruitcake catapult, the ill-fated bow-and-ice-cream, and the high-flying snow-cone helicopter. Experience the first mobile dessert venture not to end in splattered sugar with today's Groupon: for $5, you get two "grande" desserts at the Sugar Philly Truck (a $10 value). Check the website's calendar for info on where the Sugar Philly Truck will be from week to week.

Formerly a mobile post office, the Sugar Philly Truck (named "Sheila") travels the streets of Philadelphia while dishing out delectable gourmet treats, avoiding jogging wannabe-boxers and unleashed cheesesteaks at every turn. Track down the truck for two of any desserts, such as the chocolate bread pudding, topped with an Earl Grey tea or vanilla crème anglaise, or the spicy Mexican layered chocolate cakes. The vanilla crème brûlée comes flavored with Madagascar vanilla bean and caramelized sugar, and the crème fraiche cheesecake is a modest reward for building the first perpetual motion machine.

You'll be able to quickly spot the Sugary Philly Truck by its whimsical paint job, which depicts sugar cubes and cupcakes raining down on the Philadelphia skyline—an accurate depiction of a 1956 storm. The truck also strives to use more eco-friendly methods, as it's powered by compressed natural gas rather than gasoline, and its utensils are created from cornstarch. Avoid a high-end restaurant's long waits and enraged robotic parking attendants and have gourmet dessert come to you with today's Groupon to the Sugar Philly Truck.

Reviews

Although the Sugar Philly Truck doesn’t have many online reviews at this time, the University of Pennsylvania's food blog Penn Appétit featured the mobile sweet shop, and Yelpers give it a four-star average.

  • the brainchild of Penn grad Franklin Shen (SAS ’03) and Drexel grad John Suh, is a gourmet dessert food truck which offers patrons a sweet form of stress relief. Head chef Daniel Tang whips up chocolate bread pudding, peanut panna cotta, pear almond tart, vanilla crème brulee, crème fraiche cheesecake, and spicy Mexican chocolate layer cake, each of which can be enjoyed for only $5. – Penn Appétit
  • We wandered over to Sugar Philly and both ordered the creme brulee. Wow. Delicious! Plus the guy torches it right there in front of you which is just fun to watch. – Erin M., Yelp
