The owners and staff at The ClayGround Studio in Ellicott City were very friendly and took time with my daughter and me to teach us how to use the clay wheel, design pottery, and use different paints to result in different patterns. I'm glad I saw the offer on Groupon and will return to The ClayGround even without a coupon!

For this “Mud & Merlot” basic wheel-throwing class, students create a vase, cup, or bowl over the course of multiple visits. On their first visit, they create their piece. Then, they come back to glaze their piece. (There is no additional charge for glazing.) Finally, they return a third time to pick up their completed piece. Students should dress in casual clothes that can stand to get a bit messy. This is an active art studio and gallery with sharp and breakable items and equipment. Students should use caution when handling equipment and sharp objects.

The instructors were very helpful and friendly. The instructor for our clay modeling gave great instructions on using the wheel and keeping the vessels round not lopsided. He showed tips for various designs for the vessels. Our glaze instructor showed us options of glazes and differing results by using different colors together.

The whole ClayGround team is terrific. They're encouraging, helpful and make this a fun experience. We threw our pieces just before everything was closed because of Covid-19, but went back today to glaze them. Not only had they carefully saved our pieces and had them waiting and ready for us to glaze, but they had completely renovated the studio space during the pandemic. It is an open, bright space with loads of windows and great sunlight. We can't wait to go back and would highly recommend this as a fun place to go - for groups or individuals. I'd give them 6 stars if I could!
