Today's side deal will make you more spontaneous and spare you the trouble of scripting out your responses to mandatory office chit-chat. For $75, you get six improv classes at The ComedySportz Theatre in Lakeview (a $200 value). Each course term lasts six weeks, and classes take place once a week at ComedySportz's training center. Check out the class schedule; the next term begins January 10, 2010 and your Groupon is only good for the level 1 class.
Comedy Sportz's roster of comedy courses caters to six different skill levels, but this Groupon is only good for fundamentals of improvisation. At the end of every term, students in each class level perform for friends and family.
Improv isn’t just for aspiring comedians and Colin Mochrie—these skills come in handy for any situation where you’re forced to think fast (speed dating, job interviews, Swedish massages). Plus, laughter is the only clinically proven medicine, so it's be instrumental in fighting off grave illness such as dropsy, the clampers, and chowder-fists. Round up your friends and see who's funny, or overcome your fear of strangers and go alone.
Although there are few online reviews of ComedySportz classes, Citysearchers and two Insider Pages users give the actors' improvisation a perfect five stars. Centerstage reviewers also commend the performances:
- Good improv isn't easy, but the Comedy Sportz casts pull it off. This place is as good as Second City as far as consistently good comedy. – n v., Insider Pages
- The improvisers were smart, witty, and FUNNY!! I have seen a lot of improv outside of Chicago and I have to say the ComedySportz performers had true skills and talent. – Sara, Centerstage Chicago
- These guys are hysterical…If you want to see up and coming performers, this is the place to do it. – sbelle, Citysearch
