The Issue: Pervasiveness of Poverty in Greenville County

About 14.7% of the population of Greenville County lives below the federal poverty line, according to data from the US Census Bureau. Also, more than 23,000 of the county’s children live in poverty, according to data from Kids Count, an Annie E. Casey Foundation project. Many low-income people are food insecure, meaning they do not know where their next meal is coming from.

The Campaign: Planting Seeds to Grow Organic Produce

If 50 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then The Generous Garden Project can purchase enough seeds to plant 4 acres of vegetables in its newly acquired garden space. In the past 18 months, The Generous Garden Project has donated 103,000 pounds of organic produce grown in its 4.5-acre garden to local food pantries and shelters to supplement the canned food they already receive to feed people. With new seeds, the project will be able to cultivate its new land to continue harvesting vegetables for local people who are food insecure. Each additional $10 raised will go toward organic fertilizers and soil amendments to support the new seeds.

The Generous Garden Project

The Generous Garden Project works to combat hunger in local communities by growing a steady supply of fresh produce, which it donates to local ministries and food banks. Volunteers plant and harvest vegetables in a 4.5-acre garden in Greenville, and share their skills by teaching others how to grow their own fruit and vegetables. Local farmers also call upon The Generous Garden Project’s volunteers to glean crops that would otherwise be left to rot in the fields or be plowed after a harvest.
