- Safe, easy-to-learn techniques
If the Indiana Jones films have taught us anything, it is that in order to have a successful teaching career, one must train one's upper body to be adept at dangling. Engage in extreme academia with today’s Groupon: for $49, you get a four-hour beginning rock-climbing trip with Treks and Tracks (an $89 value). Expeditions begin at Castle Rock State Park (about 25 miles north of Santa Cruz). You must be at least 14 years old to climb.
Treks and Tracks’ beginning rock-climbing course gives aspiring mountaineers an educational and safe introduction to climbing in a beautiful, scenic setting. Novices are welcome to take the class, as every rock-taming trainee will get extensive safety instruction, such as how to set up a top rope to make sure the climber is totally protected. During the four-hour trek, you’ll learn belaying techniques, rappelling, how to tie unbreakable knots, rope management, and how to ask a peregrine falcon for directions while dangling from a mountain. Treks and Tracks’ knowledgeable, climb-obsessed guides are thoughtful and easy to understand, and they’ll make certain that each bouldering pupil feels comfortable with the entire process. And, you’ll learn everything while next to the diverse wildlife and unusual rock formations at Castle Rock State Park.
All guides are trained and ready in case of a wilderness emergency, and each is always cognizant of ensuring that their trainees are totally safe and secure. If you’ve ever been curious about how to scamper up the side of rock formation, a vertical wall, or your library’s insurmountable pile of Ayn Rand novels, today’s Groupon to Treks and Tracks gives you the chance to learn from an experienced, down-to-earth professional.
Reviews
Five Yelpers give Treks and Tracks a perfect five-star average:
- It's rare to find instructors that can intelligently transfer knowledge to their students. Highly recommend a T&T class. – Heather C.
- All three of our guides were a ton of fun, very friendly and knowledgable. They are also all very cool-I understand they do horse back trips and sailing in addition to rock climbing. – Corinna M.

About Treks and Tracks
Surrounded by craggy peaks, three men in bright red helmets stand in the midst of wilderness, surveying the mountains around them as their group of hikers break for a snack on the rocky ground. This interface with the majesty of nature is all in a day's work for this trio of adventurers: Paul Mangasarian and Jakob and Daniel Laggner. Still, their passion for open-air exploration grows with each expedition they lead. Paul, Jakob, and Daniel cofounded Treks and Tracks with the dream of orchestrating excursions into nature that combine ancient means of travel—such as sailing, horseback riding, and hitchhiking on a centaur—with modern sports ranging from surfing to rock climbing. Though they focus on introducing novice outdoorsfolk to unspoiled wilderness around the world, Treks and Tracks' cofounders also strive to leave the awe-inspiring surroundings they visit as pristine as they found them by rigorously upholding practices of environmental stewardship on each expedition.
