Only 45% of San Francisco children eat the recommended daily servings of fruit and vegetables, a fact that can combine with other socioeconomic factors to put some kids at a disproportionately high risk for ailments such as congestive-heart failure and diabetes. Urban Sprouts helps facilitate youth's understanding of health and environmentally related subjects such as nutrition and eco-literacy through interactive in-school programs and outdoor excursions.
Summer Sprouts, a program organized in cooperation between Urban Sprouts and Garden for the Environment, helps city youth learn about not only health and the environment, but also gardening and leadership. The initiative helps participants identify and implement healthy lifestyle changes and provides valuable job skills to high-school students as they train to lead a two-week program for other young people. Field trips often play an important role in the Summer Sprouts experience, allowing kids to get out of the city and visit locations such as local farms, where they can receive hands-on education regarding the nutritional and economic impact of growing fresh produce. The lessons learned from such outings help students make more informed nutritional decisions and gain a better understanding of green practices and jobs.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help Urban Sprouts enable city young people attend an educational field trip. If G-Team members can raise $500, Urban Sprouts can fund a farm field trip for 30 middle-school and high-school students. Each additional $500 raised will fund a trip for another 30 students.
