Contrary to what one might assume, rock climbing is not the opposite of rock tumbling, though it is still inadvisable to enjoy both activities concurrently. Learn to tumble upward with today's deal for wall climbing at Vertical World. This Groupon is only valid for the Tacoma location. Choose between the following two options:
- For $8, you get one-day pass, plus shoe rental (a $17 combined value)
- For $29, you get a one-month pass (a $58 value)
Vertical World is a climbing gym with training and programs for youth and adults. Get a taste of wall scaling with a one-day pass, or choose a one-month pass good for a full month of core strengthening, hand callusing, and nostril flaring physical fun. A knowledgeable staff provides training to first timers as well as advanced tips for more expert cragsmen. Ascend the 16-foot wall via the buddy system and test the trust that binds your best-friendship, marriage, or bus driver–bus passenger relationship. The Tacoma gym is all bouldering, so try your chalk-dusted hands at this form of freestyle climbing unencumbered by ropes and harnesses, or put yourself through the ringer on a bevy of apparatuses designed to help you develop the sinewy back and rippling abs of a half human/half gecko natural aberration.
Vertical World opened its doors in 1987 with a few rocks glued to plywood panels and ropes made of repurposed licorice. Today's facility is far more advanced and can accommodate birthday parties, school and church groups, corporate events, and youth camps for wall-climbing baby spiders. Check the online calendar for special events and lessons to propel your inner alpinist to the summit of Mount Cragtacula.
Subject to waiver. For those ages 18 and under, waiver must be signed by parent.
- And best of all, no special skills or equipment are necessary. “That’s the beautiful thing about this facility, it requires no previous training. We’ve made it very safe in here,” Doyle said. – Matt Nagle, Tacoma Weekly
- The majority of the gym is given to top roping and there are a wide variety of routes available. – Anton S., Seattle location, Yelp
In 1987, indoor climbing was as unpopular in the Seattle area as breeding labradoodles. But Vertical World––a pioneer indoor climbing gym––introduced the city to the up-and-coming sport of rock climbing in a controlled environment. Since its inception, the gym has expanded to three other locations in Everett, Tacoma, and Redmond, the latter hosting eastside climbers for more than 20 years.
A team of experienced route creators challenges climbers with more than 200 bouldering, lead, or top-rope routes in a wide variety of difficulty levels. The gym hosts competitive youth teams that have gone on to national or world tournaments. The gym's staff of climbers and guides also leads outdoor excursions that build confidence and teach novices how to identify a rock wall in the wild.
