In Harlem, as in communities everywhere, small businesses that cannot afford to tap into technology face serious hurdles as they attempt to compete and flourish. Connecting a business to the Internet can help it gain more customers, better serve existing customers, and interact with other businesses. However, many of Harlem's small-business owners lack the resources and training required to take advantage of the opportunities the Internet makes possible.
Wireless Harlem seeks to enrich and empower the Harlem community by giving residents and business owners access to 21st-century tools, both through donations of hardware and software and through educational programming. Since 2008, the nonprofit organization has given away nearly 500 computers and established 10 free wireless-access points throughout the community, a number it hopes to expand to 15–20 by the end of the summer. Nonetheless, high costs and outdated infrastructure keep Internet access far from universal; Wireless Harlem hopes that by providing businesses with wireless-access devices those businesses will be better able to thrive and, in the process, become more valuable assets to their community.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help Wireless Harlem provide Internet access to Harlem’s small businesses. If G-Team members raise $600, Wireless Harlem can provide four wireless-access devices to local small-business owners, increasing their ability to compete and to benefit the community. Each additional $10 raised will go toward a class for small-business owners on computer and social-media use.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
