Having at-home access to books stimulates children’s minds when they are away from school, solidifying students’ desire and ability to learn during their most formative academic years. Unfortunately, in many of Chicago’s low-income neighborhoods, there may be only one book per 300 children. Working in the Schools (WITS) campaigns to increase reading-proficiency rates for students in low-income neighborhoods through literacy programs and weekly reading sessions. First by improving reading comprehension, and then by expanding to address lifelong goals, weekly reading programs build community members through the love of literature.
As part of their efforts, WITS tutors purchase hardcover books at a nonprofit discount and distribute them to children in need. Through this program, each student receives two age-appropriate books every year to take home, bolstering their personal libraries while increasing the likelihood that family members will read to them at home. Last year, WITS volunteered tutoring services for more than 2,500 students in the Chicago area, improving literacy rates in some of the lowest-performing public schools.
Join G-Team and donate $15 to help improve reading comprehension by giving books to children. If G-Team members raise $750, 50 Chicago-area public-school children will receive their own age-appropriate book, improving their access to learning materials and increasing their ability to learn outside of school.
