Boasting a rich history highlighted by five World Series championships, the Pittsburgh Pirates have entertained fans with thrilling athleticism and mesmerizing shadow puppets since the team’s inception in 1887, 10 years before bats were invented. Ballpark habitués can cheer as first-year manager Clint Hurdle uses elaborate hand signals and megaphone-enhanced shouts of encouragement to spark his squad as they attempt to bypass the reigning division champion Cincinnati Reds for the National League Central title. This year, the Pirates' offense is led by center fielder Andrew McCutchen, who finished the 2010 season with a .286 average and 33 stolen bases. Fans will also receive promotional items, such as a Pirates shirt and a reusable coffee sleeve, at the April 22 game, a Build-A-Bear Pirates bunny (for kids 14 and younger) at the April 24 game, a Pirates shirt at the May 6 and May 20 games, a mini bat (for kids 14 and younger) and earrings (for moms) at the May 8 game, and a pierogi beach towel (for kids 14 and younger) at the May 22 game.

Stadium visitors will be able to soak in the scenic and intimate confines of the 10-year-old PNC Park, which showcases striking riverside views and a classic ballpark design. The downtown skyline, yellow-painted Roberto Clemente Bridge, and occasional Waldo sightings all create picturesque views that can be enjoyed from any of the stadium’s 38,362 seats.

About Pittsburgh Pirates

In the Pittsburgh Alleghenies' first National League game in 1887, the rag-tag squad amassed six runs against the mighty Chicago White Stockings, establishing the team as a force to be reckoned with for decades to come. Today, through more than 130 years, five World Series titles, and four previous stadiums, the Alleghenies—now the Pirates—make their home at PNC Park, where pop flies soar amid views of the Clemente Bridge and Steel City skyline sprawling in the background. Located only 443 feet away—or, by official MLB measurements, 807.3 half-eaten hot dogs—the Allegheny River waits for home runs to splash down after sailing over the right-field wall, which stands at 21 feet high in honor of legendary Pirate Roberto Clemente. Off the field, the stone archways lining the entry-level façade tip their cap to the club's former longtime home, Forbes Field, and an outdoor terrace and riverwalk cool down fans enjoying the game on warm summer nights.
