If you make New Year’s resolutions, there’s a good chance the promise to get fit and reduce your stress are at the top of your list. Probably because they’re usually at the top of everyone’s list. Lake Tahoe

  • Increase your fitness: Go skiing. North Lake Tahoe has one of the largest concentrations of ski resorts in the United States. The most famous, Squaw Valley, has 4,000 acres of trails spread out across six peaks. After ski season, you can hike or bike the scenic Tahoe Rim Trail, which extends for 165 miles around the lake.
  • Reduce stress: Hit up one of the area’s many day spas or lose yourself in the art scene at local galleries.
  • Rest your head: Granlibakken Tahoe has a private ski hill and cross-country ski trails. When the weather’s warm, you can hit the tennis courts or the ropes course at the adventure park. There’s a full-service spa as well.

Sedona

  • Increase your fitness: Hike the Airport Loop, a 3.2-mile hiking trail that encircles the small Sedona Airport. You’ll get up close and personal with Sedona’s stunning red rocks. Keep an eye out for Cathedral Rock along the way—it’s one of the most photographed objects in Arizona.
  • Reduce stress: Try hanging out near Sedona’s vortexes, where spiritual energy is believed to be especially high. You can hike to marked vortex sites at Airport Mesa, Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, Schnebly Hill, and Boynton Canyon.
  • Rest your head: L'Auberge de Sedona is a creekside resort that offers spa services, yoga classes, and a concierge who can point you to the best hikes.

Costa Rica

  • Increase your fitness: Costa Rica is brimming with beautiful national parks where you can spot wild sloths and howler monkeys while hiking or get a bird’s-eye view while ziplining through the canopy.
  • Reduce stress: Soak in the hot springs at Arenal Volcano National Park. The therapeutic waters are filled with beneficial minerals and can reach an ahh-inducing 100 degrees.
  • Rest your head: At Lomas del Volcán, rooms have private patios that look out onto lush gardens, and you can see Arenal Volcano from many spots on the property. Staff are happy to arrange treks to the volcano and hot springs as well as river float trips, night hikes, and other outdoor excursions.
