Makeovers That Will Change Your Life, But Not Too Much

It’s hard to deal with change. It’s why Hollywood makes so many sequels, and why old people run away when young people use slang.

But a change—even a small change—can also make you feel powerful and in control of your destiny. If you’ve decided to give yourself a makeover, but don’t know where to start, consider making small changes that can have a big impact on the way you look (and feel!), but still leave you feeling like… you. Below, we gathered five makeover ideas that anyone can pull off without completely reinventing themselves.

Try a low-maintenance haircut.

Sure, chopping off almost a foot of your hair is pretty drastic, but going for a style that’s a similar (albeit shorter) version of your old ‘do makes the transition feel a lot less scary. Our advice: consider the Lob, or the long bob. First popularized by Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss, it’ll make anyone used to long hair (like Jen, above) feel 10 pounds lighter. Plus, unlike a pixie cut, the Lob’s growing-out process is easy-breezy. If you’re still on the fence, you can follow our editor Jen’s transformation to see if it’s for you.

Experiment with Color.

If you decide to try purple lipstick like our beauty blogger Favin did, people are definitely going to notice. But when incorporated into an otherwise neutral color palette, a bold lip is really not so different from a piece of statement jewelry or a new eye-catching top. Best of all, it washes off at the end of the night, making it a low-risk way to try something different.

Get fit.

Sick of the same clothes, but short on shopping money? Make your old clothes fit like new by losing a few pounds or sculpting a few muscles. Not a gym rat? Consider CrossFit. It’s one of the few regimens that can take you from “never done a pullup before” to “documented pullup do-er.” Don’t be put off by it’s intense reputation, either. CrossFit instructors can scale the workout to any fitness level, and the class atmosphere is supportive, if somewhat full of primal grunts.

Let your hands do the talking.

If you always stick to the same red or pink polish, shake things up with an inverted french manicure, like our editor Kate did. When painted in neutral hues like the ones above, it’s subtle enough to wear to a business meeting, but hip enough for an Illuminati meeting thanks to the half-moon accents.

Get a tattoo ... on your face.

No, not the Mike Tyson kind—we’re talking about getting permanent makeup, which is a bit of a misnomer since it’s not completely permanent (it fades enough that you’ll need to get it reapplied every four or so years). The look can be as subtle and natural as you’d like, so it won’t look that different from how you do your own makeup every day. But it can shave significant time off your morning routine, especially if you go with permanent eyeliner. Symmetrical eyeliner takes time and motor skills!
