If you live in Los Angeles, movies probably play a pretty prominent role in your life. But a movie is only as good as the theater you see it in, so instead of just heading to the closest multiplex and calling it a day, why not try finding one that matches your personality? We’ve put together a guide to help all kinds of moviegoers get what they want, whether it’s fully reclining seats or live musical accompaniment.

Electric Dusk Drive-In | Downtown

Perfect for: Nostalgists—and those who don’t like looking for parking.

What’s on the schedule: Everything from cult classic Clue to beloved faves Raiders of the Lost Ark and ET. No new releases, though.

What makes it special: You don’t need a car to get a ticket, thanks to lawn seating. It’s also pet-friendly, so go ahead and bring the dog along.

iPic Theater | Westwood

Perfect for: Anyone looking to feel like the ultimate A-lister.

What’s on the schedule: A small selection of new releases, including 3D screenings.

What makes it special: This place really pampers guests. Everyone can enjoy the reserved seating, but Premium Plus ticket-holders get recliners, blankets, complimentary popcorn, and a button to summon servers bearing gourmet cuisine and signature cocktails.

Nuart Theatre | West LA

Perfect for: Film buffs with a soft spot for John Waters.

What’s on the schedule: Indie and foreign films, as well as documentaries and midnight movies.

What makes it special: It’s the flagship Landmark theater, for starters, and in thanks for screening his devilishly offensive Pink Flamingos for years, John Waters shot an antismoking PSA exclusively for the Nuart.

Old Town Music Hall | El Segundo

Perfect for: Wannabe flappers and fans of The Great Gatsby.

What’s on the schedule: Vintage silent and early sound-era films.

What makes it special: It resembles the grand movie palaces of yore with red velvet curtains, giant chandeliers, and—the star of the show—a 1925 pipe organ that provides live accompaniment to the silent classics.

TCL Chinese Theatre | Hollywood

Perfect for: Tourists and Hollywood superfans.

What’s on the schedule: The latest releases in standard and 3D, as well as the occasional red-carpet premiere.

What makes it special: This Hollywood theater is one of the top tourist attractions in Los Angeles. A walk through the doors traces the steps of everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Steven Spielberg, whose footprints are immortalized in the cement outside.
