When I got married in 2016, I thought I had my hair situation under control. My good friend Lindsay was going to do it. She was a former hairstylist who had already given two of our other good friends gorgeous wedding updos for their big days. Then she found out she was pregnant and due basically the same week as my wedding. So I needed a plan B.
In addition to finding a new hairstylist, I had to come up with a whole new updo plan that wasn't just "do your thing, I trust you." I quickly realized that pictures were key, both in terms of finding wedding updos that I liked and in terms of communicating with my stylist.
That's why I wanted to put together this list of gorgeous wedding hairstyles from Instagram. Whether you're the bride, a bridesmaid, the MOB or MOG, or simply a guest, these photos should help inspire your next formal 'do.

Pretty in Pink
Welp, your search is over, and you didn't even have to read this whole article! Because obviously anyone who looks at this stunning braided updo entwined with teeny infinity braids won't need to spend any more time looking for wedding updos. You're welcome.

Retro Vibes
Kidding! This braided updo is equally gorgeous and would pair perfectly with a vintage-style wedding dress. The rose-gold hair pins add a modern touch and keep it from looking too costumey, always a risk with a themed vintage wedding.

Naturally Formal
A few twists and some strategically placed pins transform stretched-out curly hair into one of the prettiest black hair updos for weddings that we've seen. Leave it as is or dress it up even more with fresh flowers or crystals. The best part? Tying a silk scarf around your hair should help your updo last for at least another day postwedding.

Romantic Texture
This romantic style feels put-together and yet still very effortless. That's due to its piecey texture and mega volume. It also has a side bun that—unlike the aggressive side buns of yesteryear—rests only slightly off center. The result is a much softer, flattering look.
Pro Tip: To keep updos from looking flat, make sure you properly prep your hair. Add texture with a curling wand, tease the roots, and lock it all in with a volumizing hair spray.

Casual Dutch Fishtail
Calling all Bohemian brides! This unfussy fishtail braid would fit perfectly with a casual beach or backyard barbecue wedding. The diagonal angle of the braid and the loose tendrils in front make it look a little more formal than your average fishtail braid.

Elevated Bun
If you love the classic look of a bridal bun, but want something with a little more pizzazz, this look is for you. The combination of twists and wrapped hair makes this bun feel fresh and modern—even with the addition of a traditional bridal hair flower like baby's breath.
Pro Tip: The majority of these pictures feature wedding hair updos for long hair or medium hair, but these looks can still be achieved if you have short hair. You just need some clip-in hair extensions.

Soft Twisted Bun
If you're a mother-of-the-bride, you're probably looking for a wedding updo that doesn't read as too "matronly." Instead of a teased bouffant, opt for a soft twisted bun like this MOB did. Bonus points for accessorizing with something sentimental, like this paper flower made by the MOB's daughter.
