A person who can say no to dessert simply should not be trusted. If you've ever been to a Mexican bakery, you've probably seen tres leches on the menu. Learn all about this delectable cake and pretty soon you'll have a hankering for a slice.

WHAT IS TRES LECHES?

Tres leches is a sponge cake traditionally found in Mexican bakeries. For those who took Spanish class, you may know that "tres" means three and "leches" means "milk." These three kinds of milk are the main ingredients in this cake: evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and heavy cream. The combination of the three, if done right, achieves a perfect sponge cake bottom. But in order to do so, this requires poking many little holes in the top of the cooled cake so that it can absorb all of the milky liquids. When done right, this process results in a delightfully moist and light treat, with a milky liquid at the bottom.

THE HISTORY OF TRES LECHES

When it comes to regional (and delicious) delicacies, there's usually much dispute over the accuracy of the origin story. Tres leche is no different. It's been said that the original recipe used to be on the back of a can of evaporated or condensed milk sold through Central and South America to promote the use of the product. Though the recipe may differ, the cake has only increased in popularity since the 1900s. The use of canned milk is still a staple in Latin American cultures.

WHERE CAN I GET IT?

So now you're craving a slice? We don't blame you. Although you can find many recipes online, tres leche is also sold around the country. Try a local Mexican bakery or cafe. Hint: the full cakes also make for a great birthday treat.
