Just as hoverboards improve exponentially upon lowly, earth-bound skateboards, cakes are an infinitely more delicious and aerodynamic alternative to bread. Relish improved dessert technology with today's Groupon: for $35, you get two live-challenge tickets to Icing on the Cake, a benefit exhibition presented by Black Sheep Custom Cakes at the Sheraton Overland Park Hotel from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 17 (up to an $80 value).

Icing on the Cake celebrates local and celebrity confectionarianism with resplendent baked treats, devoting all proceeds to the Newhouse shelter, which grants shelter and services to domestic-abuse victims. Festivities open with the sugar-art show, where sucrose sculptors and ambrosia artisans submit their masterworks for the harsh scrutiny of audience appraisers, celebrity judges, and giant bipedal tongues. Cohosts Mike Elder, three-time champion of TLC's Ultimate Cake Off, and Yve Rojas of Survivor: Redemption Island test the delectability and structural integrity of each olfactory opus, bestowing awards including Best Use of Mechanics, the nonconformist Black Sheep, and the all-inclusive Kitchen Sink.

The baking bonanza culminates with a TV-style live challenge pitting four celebrity-chef teams in a three-hour bake-off of Kansas City–themed custom cakes, such as a miniature Arrowhead Stadium doused in Gates’ barbecue sauce. Taking part will be Brian Stevens of TLC's Next Great Baker, Debbie Goard of Food Network Challenge, and Bob Brougham and Ruth Rickey of TLC's Ultimate Cake Off, duking it out with pastry blenders, rolling pins, and jumbo spatulas.

About Black Sheep Custom Cakes

Mike Elder, a Kansas City native and the three-time undefeated champion of TLC's Ultimate Cake Off, founded KC CakeFest to capitalize on the boom in reality cake shows and to generate proceeds for The Whole Person, a nonprofit program dedicated to helping people with disabilities lead independent lives. Attracting talent ranging from Elder's fellow contestants on Ultimate Cake Off to the batter wranglers on Next Great Baker, KC CakeFest's crowning events are its celebrity cake battles, which pit teams of confection architects against one another for the merriment of onlookers and for the judgment of cake expert Leigh Grode. Other attractions include displays by national cake artists and free demos on topics such as how to resist eating a whole cake, cake dives, and cupcake chucks. Furthering revelry, rockabilly band The Rumblejetts will play a live set during each intermission.
